That long-rumoured Goldeneye 64 remaster exists and has leaked out into the world. And from all accounts, it is bloody great.
It’s perhaps not a stretch to say Goldeneye 64 played a major part in the video gaming lives of nearly every gamer who owned (or knew someone who owned) a Nintendo 64.
So when rumours came about years ago (via Ars Technica) that there was a remaster of Goldeneye 64 coming out, folks were super pumped at the prospect of replaying updated versions of iconic levels like Facility and Dam.
I’m not talking about that meh “reimagining” of Goldeneye for the Nintendo Wii, this was meant to be a full blown remaster of the original 1997 masterpiece.
Sadly, nothing was ultimately released despite clear evidence that it was being worked on and looked to be coming out on the Xbox 360 via Xbox Live Arcade at some point before rights issues got in the way.
It’s an absolute shame we never got to play this remaster because it has now leaked out into the world and it looks bloody great.
As per IGN, a YouTuber by the name of Graslu00 leaked a video of a full single-player playthrough and 30 minutes of multiplayer of the unreleased remaster. The graphics are clearly from a couple of generations ago but the gameplay is unmistakenly Goldeneye 64 albeit polished up.

And for those hoping to get their hands on this unreleased game, well it seems like the internet gods are smiling down on everyone because the files for this Goldeneye remaster were subsequently leaked online (via IGN) for everyone to get their hands on.
Ars Technica managed to get a hold of these leaked files and got to play this lost masterpiece using the Xeniu emulator on Windows 10.
And as far as they’re concerned, it looks and plays brilliantly and is a worthy update to the original. High praise indeed.
While this remaster of Goldeneye will forever be a “what if” moment in the annuls of video game history, at least we’re getting a new James Bond game from Hitman developers IO Interactive.
And based on how great Hitman 3 has been, IO Interactive’s 007 game is definitely something to look forward to.
