It’s taken some time, but as of today, it is illegal in our state (New South Wales) to “intentionally record or distribute an intimate image of a person without their consent”, which is to say, if you put pornographic images of someone online, as an act of revenge, you will face three years in jail. This will obviously also include videos.
There is also an $11,000 fine, but it’s the jail time that offenders should be most worried about. Well, it is their own moral compass that offenders should be most worried about, and what the act of posting such a thing says about the way they conduct themselves as a human. Until that happy day, it’s the ol’ jail dissuasion that will have to step in when their own judgement simply won’t.
Another great law introduced today, is that even threatening to distribute these images/videos/etc. is an offense.
“The new laws shift the power away from vengeful ex-partners and manipulative predators and help victims regain privacy and dignity,” Attorney General Mark Speakman wrote in a statement.
It’s a step forward. Let’s hope such progressive thought continues.
