One of the most mysterious artistic partnerships of recent years has had another layer added to it, with the stunning revelation that the mum of the Haim sisters was Paul Thomas Anderson’s art teacher.

Alana Haim, one third of the pop rock trio, was recently cast in the acclaimed filmmaker’s upcoming ninth film, Licorice Pizza, set to arrive in cinemas in November.

Ahead of its highly anticipated release, she sat down with Vanity Fair for an in-depth interview about her acting debut. But I only care about that revelation. That absolutely stunning revelation.

It turns out that Alana’s mother also happened to be Anderson’s grade school teacher. When the Haim sisters told the director that was the case, “he went into his son’s room and brought out a painting of the mountain from Close Encounters of the Third Kind.”

“He had painted it with my mother and then kept it all these years,” Alana revealed. “And he was like, ‘I loved your mom. I can’t believe you’re Miss Rose’s daughters.'”

Seriously, how small is Los Angeles? The youngest Haim sister and PTA both grew up in the San Fernando Valley, a location that’s featured in many of the director’s best films, including Magnolia and the upcoming Licorice Pizza.

The director has worked a lot with Haim in the past, making seven music videos, one live song performance, and a short film for the band. They began collaborating after an introduction from Asa Taccone.

Now that he knows they’re the daughters of his beloved Miss Rose, I’d expect this collaboration to continue for a long time. I wonder what their mum thought of PTA as a student though. That’s the next question that must be answered.
