Hold onto your wands, Potterheads, because we’ve got some magical news; A live-action Harry Potter series is officially in the works.

All seven of JK Rowling’s beloved books will be adapted into a series that will be released of Max, formerly known as HBO Max.

The streaming service said the new installment will be a “decade-long series produced with the same epic craft, love, and care this global franchise is known for”.

A statement from Max gave some insight into what fans can expect.

“The series will feature a new cast to lead a new generation of fandom, full of the fantastic detail, much-loved characters, and dramatic locations that Harry Potter fans have loved for over 25 years,” the statement said.

“Each season will be authentic to the original books and bring Harry Potter and these incredible adventures to new audiences around the world, while the original, classic, and beloved films will remain at the core of the franchise and available to watch globally,” it continued.

The series author JK Rowling has been revealed as an executive producer of the series. There are also reports that David Heyman, who executive-produced all eight of the Harry Potter films, is in talks to return.

While no cast details have been released yet, it’s unlikely that the original cast members will star in the series, as it’s now been over two decades since the first film was released.

Back in 2021, Emma Watson – who plays Hermoine Granger in the franchise – opened up about how she considered leaving the iconic role during her teen years.

“I can see that. At times, I was lonely,” Watson acknowledged on Harry Potter 20th Anniversary: Return to Hogwarts.

“I think I was scared,” she explained. “I don’t know if you ever felt like it got to a tipping point when you were like… ‘This is kind of forever now’.”

Watson added, “The fame thing had finally hit home – in a big way. No one had to convince me to see it through. The fans genuinely wanted me to succeed and they all genuinely have each other’s backs. How great is that?”
