Despite the fog of war that has dominated a galaxy far far away for generations, the general Star Wars populous still manages to take the time to style themselves with a certain cosmic panache – Obviously, sanctions put in place by the Trade Federation didn’t impact the fashion industry in deep space and, well, thank god.
Toy makers Mattel have announced their plan to pay homage to the inexplicably stylish characters of the universe by announcing a collaboration between Barbie and Star Wars just in time to remind the world that the next instalment of the Star Wars franchise, Rise Of Skywalker, is in cinemas later this year.
Speaking about the collection, Designer Robert Best seemed pretty stoked on the concept given he is a fan of both the Barbie Universe and the Star Wars one.
“As a fan of both myself – my hope is that fans will share the excitement and joy that I had when creating these dolls from this unique and amazing collaboration. For me personally – this was definitely a dream collaboration and I hope that comes through to the fans.”
Rather than re-issuing the regular ol’ Star Wars figurines you may spot in the Woolies toy isle, Mattel have approached the collaboration as only high fashion could. Think of it as Cosplay Chic. Taking inspo from Darth Vader, R2-D2 and Princess Leia / General Organa, the collection features three reimagined dolls stylised through what the makers describe as “a distinctive Barbie high-fashion filter.”
Per this apparent filter, Darth Vader has swapped his helmet for a pair of highly adaptable sunglasses, RD2D has blue hair and appears to have taken a piece of C3PO to use as a clutch while Leia, seen in an elegant white gown, has reduced the significance and agency of the Alliance Starbird insignia to a fashion statement.
The dolls are currently available for pre-order and are expected to ship out in November. Coming in at $US100 they certainly aren’t your every day Barbie Doll.
Interestingly enough, the recommended age for the toy is listed as “Adult Collector” so, this grown-ass man will have no issues purchasing one.
Star Wars: The Rise Of Skywalker will be in cinemas December 19th.
