In today’s glitch in the matrix, George W. Bush just had a major, humungous, mammoth slip of the tongue onstage at an event.

The former U.S. president was giving a speech about Vladimir Putin and Russia’s invasion of Ukraine when the almighty gaffe happened. “The decision of one man to launch a wholly unjustified and brutal invasion of Iraq – I mean of Ukraine,” he said, perhaps the Freudian slip to end all Freudian slips.

“Iraq,” he then muttered, shaking his head as the crowd at the George W. Bush Presidential Center erupted into strange laughter. “75,” he added, attempting to use his age to justify his slip of the tongue.

Everyone is entitled to believe what they want about the Invasion of Iraq, but it’s undeniable that Bush’s mistake feels like a real ‘letting it slip’ moment. It’s almost beyond parody.

Naturally everyone on social media is having a wonderful time with the incident. “If you were George W. Bush, you think you’d just steer clear of giving any speech about one man launching a wholly unjustified and brutal invasion,” someone noted.

“George W. Bush didn’t do a Freudian slip. He did a Freudian Confession,” joked comedian John Fugelsang. “At least George W. Bush admits that he’s a war criminal now. Self awareness is a key step to recovery,” wrote another Twitter user. Of course someone else added the Curb your Enthusiasm theme music over Bush’s mixup.

Others didn’t find the funny side. “George W. Bush lied in order to slaughter hundreds of thousands of people and never faced any consequences for it. Now he gets to make speeches to rooms full of people who sit and listen quietly until it’s time to laugh at his little joke about slaughtering all those people,” wrote someone disparagingly. “George W. Bush is a war criminal,” proved to be another popular tweet.
