The Greens are hoping that the Inner West Council will stop all January 26 Australia Day celebrations.

A motion will be moved at tomorrow’s council meeting by Greens councillor Tom Kiat to officially support the nationwide change the date campaign.

“Recognising January 26 as a day of invasion, mourning and survival” calls for an official recognition that January 26 “marks the beginning of the British invasion of the lands of First Nations people”, and moves that the council stops referring to that date as Australia Day, and to halt all celebrations on the day.

If the motion is successful, the Inner West Council will be the first NSW council to abandon official Australia Day celebrations.

Fremantle Council led the charge in late 2016, refusing to acknowledge the date last year, and since then both Yarra and Darebin councils in Victoria have followed suit.

Darwin City Council will also consider a motion to stop celebrating the day tomorrow, as put forward by the Deputy Lord Mayor Emma Young. It’s all happening.
