Instagram has continued to expand its platform further into the social media world, becoming more than just a photo sharing platform.

Launching their own messenger app capability – Threads – is a camera first messaging app that, according to Instagram’s Director of Product Robby Stein, will give the users the ability to share photos and videos with a select group of close friends.

There is already an option to share your stories with a Close Friends list on Instagram but Threads – a standalone app – lets the user customise the experience even further. Stories, messages, videos and photos can be shared via the app, with Threads acting as a dedicated inbox.

“For your smaller circle of friends, we saw the need to stay more connected throughout the day,” a release from Instagram said.

“You can communicate what you’re doing and how you’re feeling through photos and videos. That’s why we built Threads, a new way to message with close friends in a dedicated, private space.”

Threads also introduces the option to set a status, so friends will be able to see if you’re online, or if you’re busy, you can set your status to different things ie. Studying, On The Move, etc. Instagram have noted that they’ve created Threads with ease of access and speed in mind, with added shortcuts and minimal tapping in play.
