Zack Snyder’s Justice League was always going to be some trip. Now Jared Leto’s ‘unique’ take on the Joker is being added to the fire.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Leto will be reprising the role of Batman’s nemesis in the ongoing reshoots for the new Justice League cut.

He last portrayed the character in 2016’s – and I use this in the truest sense of the word – chaotic Suicide Squad. Leto really laid into the mythology of the Joker but landed on downright weird rather than darkly disturbed angle he was aiming for.

He sent Margot Robbie, who played Harley Quinn, a live rat. He sent the rest of the cast used condoms and anal beads. After all this, Leto infamously actually only appeared in a few scenes in the final Suicide Squad film. It means that it’s not entirely clear yet how big a role his Joker will play in Snyder’s re-edited film.

It’s not the first Suicide Squad character to make a return. The character who spawned a million Halloween costumes, Harley Quinn, got her own film. Birds of Prey was released earlier this year, following Margot Robbie’s character in the wake of her breakup from the Joker.

Is Snyder getting too greedy? Jared Leto’s Joker wasn’t even slated to appear in any of the original versions of Justice League, even Snyder’s own cut of the film before he stepped down in 2017.

Perhaps Snyder is planning to use the reshoots to introduce a new character to the story, indicating more heavy changes from both his original version as well as the final theatrical cut that Joss Whedon completed. It’s supposed to be four hours long, after all.

Never one for subtlety, our Snyder. I think the only thing that’s guaranteed with the new Snyder Cut: it’s going to be massive and it’s going to be controversial. Just enjoy the carnage.
