Joker might have been quite the divisive film but Joaquin Phoenix thinks there’s potential for a sequel.
Phoenix won the Oscar for Best Actor for his portrayal of the iconic DC villain in the origin story film. Now, in a new interview with Playlist, he discussed the possibility of a second outing for the actor as the Joker.
“This is an interesting guy,” he said. “There are some things we could do with this guy and could (explore) further. But as to whether we actually will? I don’t know.”
I think when a film makes over $1 billion at the global box office and it’s highest grossing R-rated film of all time, the chances of a sequel are pretty high.
It was actually reported earlier this year that the Joker director Todd Phillips was already working on a script for the sequel. The news emerged in a pice from The Hollywood Reporter, which stated that the follow-up to the film was definitely in the works.
In their list of powerful Hollywood lawyers, they include an entry for attorney Warren Dern, who counts Phillips among his clients. In Dern’s entry, it states that “Todd Phillips struck a deal to co-write the next Joker instalment”.
And if that wasn’t enough, a separate report from The Hollywood Reporter also claimed to have insider information on Warner Bros’ schedule, which said that Joker has a “planned sequel.”

Although the piece mainly focused on Warner Bros.’ upcoming Superman film, it also confirmed that Joker 2 “will take place in the same universe.”
So yes, I’d say it sounds like a Joker sequel should be coming within the next few years. Would you like to see a follow-up on Phoenix’s Arthur Fleck?
