Veteran actor Jon Voight has sparked a wave of backlash after claiming that Donald Trump is the greatest American President since Abraham Lincoln.

It’s no stretch to say that according to most of the world, Donald Trump is, to put it nicely, a deeply divisive political figure.

Since winning the 2016 Presidential election, the American leader has been met with plenty of derision from naysayers, while his supporters have stood resolutely by his side.

Now, one of those supporters, actor Jon Voight, has generated controversy after comparing Donald Trump to Abraham Lincoln.

In a pair of videos shared to his Twitter account on Saturday, Jon Voight makes an impassioned speech, his gravelly voice praising Donald Trump and denouncing the “political left” in the process.

“I know you will agree with me when I say our president has our utmost respect and our love,” the 80-year-old actor says in his first video. “This job is not easy, for he’s battling the left and their absurd words of destruction.”

“Our nation has been built on the solid ground from our forefathers and there is a moral code of duty that has been passed on from President Lincoln,” he adds. “Our country is stronger, safer and with more jobs because our president has made his every move correct.”

“Don’t be fooled by the political left, because we are the people of this nation that is witnessing triumph. So let us stand with our president, let us stand for this truth that President Trump is the greatest president since Abraham Lincoln. God bless America.”

The videos, which were uploaded on the 50th anniversary of the premiere of John Voight’s Midnight Cowboy, and two days before Memorial Day in the US, have been met with a mixture of praise, condemnation, and confusion by most who have viewed them.

Oddly though, this is not the first time that the actor has compared Donald Trump to Abraham Lincoln, with Voight making a similar comparison ahead of Trump’s inauguration back in 2017.

“We have all been witness to a very gruelling year and a half for the president-elect,” Voight said from the steps of Washington, D.C.’s Lincoln Memorial.

“We’ve been witness to a barrage of propaganda that left us all breathless with anticipation not knowing if God could reverse all the negative lies against Mr. Trump, whose only desire was to make America great again.”

“And President Lincoln, who sits here with us,” Voight continued, “I’m sure is smiling knowing America will be saved by an honest and good man who will work for all the people, no matter their creed or colour.”
