Kylie Minogue has paid tribute to the show that launched her career, Neighbours, after it was officially confirmed that the long running soap is being axed in June.
“I’ll be forever grateful for the experience & the friends I made on @neighbours. We had no idea how big the show would become and how passionately viewers would take it to heart. Pure love! I can still hear Madge calling… CHARLENE!!!!” The ‘Spinning Around’ singer wrote on Twitter today.
Kylie joined the popular TV show in 1986 as Charlene Robinson for two and a half years, before leaving the soap to concentrate on her music career. During her tenure on Neighbours she married her on screen husband Scott Robinson, played by Jason Donovan.
Speaking on 98FM’s Big Breakfast yesterday, Donovan hinted that a possible reunion between his character and Kylie’s in the show’s finale hasn’t been ruled out.
“Well look I’m not going to say there hasn’t been a discussion about it because you know there is a possibility,” he revealed. “But I can’t say it’s gonna happen because that wouldn’t be the truth you know, so I don’t know is the answer to that.”
He continued: “But I think this might be a little bit different so look let’s see you know but if it doesn’t happen, that doesn’t make me sad either. It’s a celebration of a great Australian television series and I’m… well it’s kept my family in business for the past three decades.”
The future of Neighbours has been under threat ever since its U.K. broadcaster Channel 5 backed out of funding for the show in February. The official Neighbours Twitter account confirmed that the show will be cancelled yesterday.
The statement read: “We are so sorry to say that after nearly 37 years and almost 9000 episodes broadcast we have to confirm that Neighbours will cease production in June. Following the loss of our key broadcast partner in the UK and despite an extensive search for alternative funding, we simply have no option but to rest the show.
It continued, “to our amazing, loyal fans, we know this is a huge disappointment, as it is to all of us on the team. We thank you for all your messages and support and promise to end the show on an incredible high. From here on, we are celebrating Neighbours.”
