The Canterbury Bankstown Council has confirmed that the beloved Lakemba Ramadan Nights Festival will not be held in 2021 due to New South Wales public health orders and coronavirus restrictions.
A statement published to the council’s website confirms, “Due to current NSW public health orders and restrictions the decision has been made by Council that the formal Ramadan Nights event will not be held in 2021.
“This does not mean that we will not continue to celebrate and recognise this important time. We apologise for any inconvenience and look forward to celebrating with you in 2022.”
This marks the second year in a row that the Ramadan Nights Festival has been cancelled. The festival traditionally runs for a month between April and May, in celebration of the holy month of Ramadan in Australia. Over the years, the festival has typically attracted around 10,000 people on weeknights and up to 30,000 on Friday and Saturday nights.
It’s a festival that sees Haldon Street and Railway Parade brought to live with the intoxicating foods from Indonesia, Burman, Pakistan, India, Lebanon and Syria to commemorate Iftar — the fast-breaking meal.
It’s heartbreaking that one of the richest celebrations in Sydney will not go ahead, especially considering heinous, wretched The Royal Easter Show was given the all-clear to host up to 60,000 ticket holders each day.
ok but y’all let the easter show go on with thousands of people….I smell islamophobia 😐 https://t.co/7b0VaVdqAv

Absolutely bullshit, you can have 60,000+ people and not disinfect any rides at the Easter Show but you can’t let a few hundred people support small businesses each night? https://t.co/P44OAYR0Oc

60000 people each day were allowed to go to the Easter Show but Ramadan Nights at Lakemba was cancelled??? What kind of bullshit is this??? Lmfao there’s literally no logical explanation for the cancellation
