Another Grammys, another controversy: Louis C.K. won the Grammy for Best Comedy Album and a lot of people aren’t happy about it.

The comedian’s stand-up special Sincerely Louis C.K. triumphed over Chelsea Handler (Evolution), Lavell Crawford (The Comedy Vaccine), Lewis Black (Thanks for Risking Your Life), Kevin Hart (Zero Fucks Given), and Nate Bargatze (The Greatest Average American).

That made it Louis C.K.’s third Best Comedy Album victory, following his wins for Hilarious in 2012 and Live at Madison Square Garden in 2016.

It was a year after his second Grammy nod that the comedian admitted to numerous incidents of sexual misconduct after a damaging New York Times article was published. That led him to become one of the first victims of “cancel culture”, with his 2017 film I Love You, Daddy being pulled from distribution and his stand-up career being disrupted.

After returning to comedy in 2018, though, and now winning another Grammy, many are insisting that this proves “cancel culture” doesn’t exist. “No reason for the Academy to give him this award except to send a message that he did nothing wrong,” tweeted trial lawyer Max Kennerly.

Many compared Louis C.K.’s win to the Will Smith situation. “Same week white people are demanding Will Smith’s career be killed, there’s super creep Louis C.K. over there getting a Grammy,” wrote a Twitter user. “Will Smith is going to end up more punished than Louis C.K., you watch,” insisted someone else.

Check out more reactions below. Despite his misdemeanours, critical reactions to Sincerely Louis C.K. were mostly positive. “Perhaps, now the veil has slipped, CK can no longer be bothered pretending to the loftier ideals that used to offset his more cynical material. But then some of his cynical gags here (the one about visiting boutique gift shops, say) are wickedly good, and there’s higher-minded material, too,” wrote The Guardian in a three-star review.
