Lupita Nyong’o is the latest to pay tribute to her Marvel co-star Chadwick Boseman, who passed away due to cancer at the age of 43 last month.
Last month, the world was left reeling by the loss of Chadwick Boseman, star of the Marvel hit Black Panther, who lost a 4-year battle to colon cancer. Boseman, 43, died in his Los Angeles home in the presence of his family.
On Tuesday, September 8th, Lupita Nyong’o, who starred opposite Boseman in Black Panther, took to Instagram to leave an emotional tribute to the late star.
“I write these words from a place of hopelessness, to honor a man who had great hope. I am struggling to think and speak about my friend, Chadwick Boseman, in the past tense… The news of his passing is a punch to my gut every morning.” she said.
Nyong’o reflected on her time with Boseman in Black Panther, recalling how he had a “profound effect” on her.
“When we came together to make Black Panther, I remember being struck by his quiet, powerful presence. He had no airs about him, but there was a higher frequency that he seemed to operate from. You got the sense that he was fully present and also somehow fully aware of things in the distant future,” the statement read.
Alluding to his commitment to his role as T’Challa and his dedication to bringing to life seminal figures in African-American history, she commended Boseman’s “unwavering” spirit.

“He cared so deeply about humanity, about Black people, about his people. He activated our pride. By pushing through and working with such high purpose in the films he chose to commit to, Chadwick has made the infinite his home.” she said.
In the conclusion to her statement, she told people to ‘take your time but don’t waste your time’.
“Chadwick’s death is something that I can neither take in nor take in my stride right now. Perhaps with time… I’m going to take my time… and in his honor, I promise not to waste my time. I hope you will do the same.”
Following Boseman’s passing, tributes poured in from fans and stars alike from all over the world. His Marvel co-stars Michael B. Jordan, Angela Bassett, and Danai Gurira also made statements honoring him. Ryan Coogler, Black Panther director, called him an ancestor in an emotional essay published shortly after Boseman’s passing.
