In some news very fitting for a fry-day Friday, Maccas has announced that they’ll be giving away a free large fries as part of their new loyalty program.

The fast-food juggernaut has implemented a loyalty program called MyMacca’s rewards. South Australian’s will be able to get their hands on the free fries first, with the deal being trialed at selected McDonalds in the state on Sunday. The scheme will be rolled out nationwide next year.

MyMaccas will offer temporary deals which can be unlocked on the app. The current deal gives Aussies a free large drink and large fries when they buy a Crispy Chicken Sandwich.

The program will also allow members to accumulate points, and use the points towards claiming free items from the menu.

A complimentary Big Mac burger will cost you 7,500 points. Thankfully, this doesn’t mean that you need to spend $7500 on McDonalds in order to receive one free burger. Each cent that’s spent at the restaurant will earn one point. For example, $8.50 will earn you 850 points. This means that to accumulate enough points for a free Big Mac, you’ll need to spend a cool $750 on Maccas.

While no one (sane) is going to complain about some complimentary hot chips from Maccas, you may be wondering why one of the world’s most successful businesses needs to give away free stuff to entice customers? After all, even the restaurant’s CEO has publicly stated that 80% of Australians hit up Maccas at least once a year.

Well, the same CEO has explained that the iniative isn’t about attracting customers, but encouraging them to come more often.

“In the markets where we operate roughly 80 per cent of the population visits a McDonald’s once a year, so it’s not that we have a reach opportunity, it’s about driving frequency in this business.” said McDonald’s CEO Chris Kempczinski.

“And we’ve seen in the places where we have deployed loyalty that it absolutely does increase customer frequency so for us that is really encouraging,”
