It’s been a long six years since the iconic duo of Margaret and David has teamed up to review together for ABC’s At the Movies. Fortunately, Australia’s favourite grandparents have reunited to give us a brutally honest review of the year that was 2020.
Somehow they managed to wrap up a review of the seemingly countless disasters that have happened this year into a succinct three minutes and 19 seconds.
To kick things off, David Stratton addresses the hot mess that was Trump not acknowledging the coronavirus pandemic then smoothly transitions to the Black Lives Matter riots before delving into Tiger King.
“The premise for 2020, the hotel anticipated sequel to 2019 is simple enough. An aging despot with deteriorating mental health refuses to engage with a global pandemic and overboiling racial tensions, while people are forced to stay home to watch a documentary on big cat game parks,” Stratton begins.
“In another director’s hands perhaps it could have worked, but unfortunately, 2020 is a disappointing failure.”
“It’s difficult to work out what 2020 actually is. A sci-fi? A disaster epic? A political drama? Some sort of dark comedy? It’s hard to tell,” he continues in his trademark wry humour.
David then touches on the bushfires, floods, plagues, and dusk storms that have occurred this year before Margaret Pomeranz chimes in with some surprisingly positive feedback about 2020.
“I loved it David,” Pomeranz shares in reference to 2020, to which David responds with a very appropriately shocked, “really?!”
“It was a satire, David, it’s not meant to be taken seriously”, she informs us in her typical matter-of-fact fashion.
“I mean, didn’t you love that scene where the US president suggests everyone drinks bleach?”
Look, Margaret, you’ve got the right attitude. We, too, wish that the whole bleach gate incident was satire – along with 2020 in its entirety.
