The Batman is almost in cinemas and the hype is at its feverish height. Yet director Matt Reeves isn’t content to just enjoy this moment – he’s already looking towards the sequels.

HBO Max is working on two spinoffs and now Reeves has confirmed that one of these will be tied to a certain notorious Gotham mental health facility.

“We’re doing another series that connects to Arkham (Asylum),” he revealed in an interview with The Toronto Sun. “We are talking and thinking about the next movie, but to be honest with you, at the moment, I really want the audience to connect with this. And I really believe they will because Rob (Pattinson) is an incredible Batman.”

The series will supposedly connect to the Gotham City Police Department and explore just how deep the corruption goes inside the police force. Reeves also discussed the Penguin prequel series that will focus on Oswald Cobblepot’s rise through the criminal underworld. Colin Farrell is set to reprise his role from The Batman.

“We’re doing this Penguin series and one of the great things about that is Colin Farrell – he’s like you’ve never seen him,” he said. “He’s so incredible and he’s a scene-stealer. Along the way, we thought maybe we could do (it) as a series… So I talked to HBO Max and showed them Colin in the movie and spoke to them about what this could be and they said, ‘Let’s do it.'”

The reviews for The Batman have been coming in this week and the film’s received a mixed reception. Describing Pattinson as “dour”, ABC found it a joyless affair. “The Batman – the man, the film – is so hard-boiled it’s nigh on turned to stone. Alas, the writing is nowhere near strong enough to support this weight,” they wrote. The Sydney Morning Herald were more complimentary, saying that “emo Batman goes somewhere new.”

In a three star review, The Guardian said “Matt Reeves’ film is spectacular and well-cast but an intriguing saga of corruption devolves into a tiresome third act.”
