McDonald’s has been a staple in the fast-food world for many, many decades with today being their 80th birthday. To commemorate the beloved fast-food chain, we’re counting down our favourite treats.

Looking back on my childhood, there are so many memories I hold near and dear to my heart that involve McDonald’s. No, I’m not hired to say that, it’s actually true. From birthday parties held inside the cherished PlayPlace amongst a hoard of friends, to climbing to the highest point in the jungle gym and refusing to come down until my parents bought me another Happy Meal toy, the fast-food chain encompasses my upbringing.

I remember calling up my Papa and begging him to take me to Mickey-D’s, and like the dutiful grandfather he was, he’d always pick me up, and take me there for a quick bite to eat. He was even so devoted as a grandpa to order not just me a Happy Meal, but him one as well so I could bring home two toys.

From mountains of chips dipped in their creamy soft-serve ice cream, to crispy chicken nuggets and savoury burgers, McDonald’s has been one of those places that was always able to fill whatever craving I had, and has always given me a touch of nostalgia with every bite.

With all these memories flooding back, join us as we take you through our top five favourite Macca’s treats, with a touch more nostalgia along the way as we celebrate McDonald’s 80th birthday.

“I was a late bloomer when it came to a love of Macca’s… probably due to my family never allowing me near the stuff. Even then, it was so infrequently, that I had to make every visit count, and that meant prioritising six nuggets that I could eat slowly and savour every mouthful. From there, a beautiful friendship blossomed into what it is today.” –Zanda Wilson, Writer for The Brag Media

4. McDonaldland Cookies

“My favourite part about the McDonaldland Cookies are the cute little character shapes the come in. As a kid I would make up little back stories for each of the characters before promptly munching them up. These nostalgia fueled treats are still a fave!” –Dakota Balkwill, Data Processor

“After Macca’s got rid of the almighty Oreo McFlurry, a friend and I made it our life’s work to continually bombard their Facebook page with demands to bring back what was obviously their best dessert. I do feel bad for their social media person (I am so sorry), but hey – the Oreo McFlurry has since returned, so you’re welcome!” –Jessie Lynch, writer for The Brag Media

2. Fries dipped in Soft-Serve

“Fries dipped in soft-serve ice cream… We used to get happy meals via drive-thru and almost every time after they told my dad the price he’d say ‘I didn’t want to buy the place!’ I wanted the ground to open up and swallow me…” –Poppy Reid, Managing Editor of The Brag Media

1. McDonald’s Happy Meal

“Opening one of these bad boys was the best part of my childhood, hands down. I’d shove the chicken nuggets out of the way, forget about my drink, and dive right into whichever toy was inside. Finding a new TY Beanie Baby or Barbie tucked in amongst the spilled fries was the highlight of my life.” –Brittany Jenke, News Editor of The Brag Media
