From Tuesday February 17 until Saturday March 7 Fortyfivedownstair Gallery in Melbourne will be hosting exhibitions from Australian artists Mel Kerr and David Hirst.

A graduate fromRMIT Universty, Kerr’s work focus’ on conceptual frameworks relating to the self.Kerr explores how the metaphoricalcages that we hold onto as a child often manifest themselves in our adult subconscious. Drawing dirrectly from personal expreience, she uses the imagery of a birdcage to express a feeling of restrictedness and a desire to be free.

Hirst’s work is informed by his travels and background as a research scientist. His inspiration from his latest body of work came from time spent in the Nervada Desert and an observation of the ever changing environment. Drawing parallels between his scientific and artistic practces, Hirst attempts to “trap an emotion or a memory so the feeling can be shared with others.”
