The actress for Melisandre, Carice Van Houten, recently teased on Instagram that her appearance in House of the Dragon is possible.

Game of Thrones actress Carice Van Houten, who played the red priestess Melisandre, recently teased an appearance in House of the Dragon on her Instagram.

In the Instagram story in question, Carice reminded her followers that Melisandre is centuries old by the time of Daenerys Targaryen. The insinuation leads to the conclusion that the red priestess was still alive during the time of House of the Dragon, which takes place 172 years before the birth of Daenerys.

Melisandre wasn’t only alive during the events of House of the Dragon but was in fact alive much before that. According to her Wiki, the Lord of Light follower was born 100 years before Aegon I’s conquest of Westeros in the far reaches of Essos, a place covered in shadows and secrecy— Asshai. This makes her around 400 years old at the time of her death.

One other character with ties to Asshai that has already been introduced in House of the Dragon, in Episode 1, is Corlys Velaryon. Velaryon was said to be the greatest seafarer in all of known history during his time, spanning the world far and wide on his adventures until he was known by many as the Sea Snake.

Velaryon is a key piece of the events to come in House of the Dragon and will be prominently featured. Corlys’ expeditions once took him all the way to Asshai, located far further to the East than any location shown in Game of Thrones.

The Master of Driftmark may have made some connections during his travels, and it wouldn’t be a stretch to say he could’ve attracted the attention of a certain red priestess during his time in Asshai and other places.

Of course, there are other ways for Melisandre to appear in the series and as there is no mention of her in Fire and Blood (the book series HotD is based on), the showrunners are open to include or exclude her as they please.
