Despite continued shortages, reports are surfacing that new PS5 models with altered internals have started to hit Aussie store shelves.

The PS5 hasn’t even celebrated its first birthday yet, but that hasn’t stopped PlayStation from giving its hugely in-demand system a bit of a re-jig. Best put your expectations in check though, friends, because according to a report via the team at Press Start, the alterations are relatively minimal. That includes a weight loss of about 300 grams (must be cardio day) and a new base stand.

While neither change is mind-blowing, the new base stand will likely save a number of gamers some headache. That’s thanks to a new screw that can be adjusted without the use of a screwdriver – now simply required a good ol’ fashioned hand.  Last-minute mad dash to your closest Bunnings no longer required.

In case you’re interested, here’s PlayStation opening up a PS5:

According to the report, these changes are being made for both the PS5 Disc Edition and PS5 Digital Edition, with stock that is now arriving in the country already adopting these changes. If you’re dead set on nabbing one of these newbies, the only way you’ll be able to tell is the model number, so keep an eye out for (CFI-1102A) being listed on the box.

Of course, that means you’d actually have to find one on a shelf first, which for many is proving harder to locate than the proverbial pot of gold at the end of a rainbow.

At time of writing there’s no word on how exactly the new PS5 models have managed to shed the weight, but if you are lucky enough to nab one we totally don’t recommend cracking it open to find out. Small adjustments to the internals of a console are common place throughout its life cycle and most go completely unnoticed by the average customer.

Regardless, we really hope Sony is focusing on fulfilling its promise to ship 12 million more PS5 systems by March 2022 first before it starts planning any more face-lifts.
