Robert Eggers’ movies The Northman, The Lighthouse and The Witch have each received critical acclaim, however, the director believes they’re missing one thing; more erect penises.
The revelation comes as a bit of a surprise, considering that none of the three movies features any full frontal nudity. Regardless, Eggers said that there was supposed to be a scene with Robert Pattinson’s “actual erect penis” in The Lighthouse.
The successful director also mentioned that he wanted another naked scene in The Northman but he “didn’t get them.”
“It’s probably good that we don’t see any penises there; it might distract from the story and the tension, because human beings are such sad creatures that we would be trying to catch a glimpse the whole time,” he told Letterboxd.
However, Eggers mentioned that he still believed a naked scene could have made the cut. “In the berserkers’ raid of the Slavic village, I think if some of those berserkers had been entirely naked, that would have been a lot scarier.”
The Northman was released on April 22nd, 2022. But, despite its success the director revealed that the making of the movie wasn’t without problems.
In a new interview with the New Yorker, Eggers discussed the difficulties he had working with a bigger budget and studio. “I don’t think I’ll do it again,” he went so far as to say. “Even if it means not making a film this big ever again. I’d like to make one even bigger. But, without control, I don’t know.”
