An American nun at the centre of a legal battle with music superstar Katy Perry has died while in court, reports say.

Back in 2015, Katy Perry expressed interest in purchasing a former Los Angeles convent for $14.5m. However Sister Catherine Rose and Sister Rita Callanan shared their concerns over selling the holy building to a pop star whose provocative music was at odds with their message, despite the fact that Perry began her own career as a Christian singer.

Over the last few years, Perry, Sister Catherine Rose and Sister Rita Callanan have been embroiled in a legal battle in regards to the sale, with Perry being awarded $1.57m in 2017 after it was found a local businesswoman had interfered with the sale.

Now, as CBS reports, Sister Catherine Rose has passed away after collapsing in court while in the process of continuing to fight the legal battle.

Los Angeles Archbishop Jose Gomez released a statement on Friday confirming the passing of the nun. “Sister Catherine Rose Holzman, IHM passed away suddenly at the age of 89.[…] Sister Catherine Rose served the Church with dedication and love for many years and today we remember her life with gratitude.”

It is not known how the death of Sister Catherine Rose will affect the court case or Perry’s intentions to purchase the property, as the pop singer is yet to issue any sort of statement in regards to the incident.
