Every day we inch closer to a perfect world where we’re no longer stranded in the middle of suburbia for half an hour because our Opal card top-up didn’t go through in time. Come August, us poor sods that rely on Sydney’s public transport system will be able to say auf Wiedersehen to our Opal cards, ideally forever.
Transport for NSW has unveiled that you’ll be able to cop your opal fare through both contactless card payments — and if technology permits, through your smartphone. You’ll be charged for an Adult Opal single trip ticket, with regular daily, weekly and Sunday caps applied to your fare if you use the same card.
If you’re an unlucky sonuvabitch who has to rely on one the packed sardine tins disguised as a train for your daily commute, you’ll have to wait until November until card payment kicks in.
As someone who has currently got six active Opal cards with a split fortune of approximately $12, this is the best news ever. I can hear the bells chiming, signifying a new era of not being a messy public transport bitch. It’s 2019 and we’re all minimalists now.
