PAC-MAN 99 combines everybody’s favourite yellow chomper with the likes of Fortnite, and it’s free for Nintendo Switch Online subscribers.
Last week, known across the Internet as the week Mario died, Nintendo removed Super Mario Bros. 35 from its online service. That move seems to make some sense now, with the announcement that PAC-MAN 99 would be taking its place, and oh boy does this one look intense.
Much like Mario 35 and Tetris 99, PAC-MAN 99 takes the core gameplay you’ve come to know and love from PAC-MAN, then smoosh it into a battle royale. As a result, you’ll be in an arena with 98 other players all vying for the top spot.
While you’ll all be playing in your own field, your success will directly impact your opponent. Any ghosts that you eat, for example, will be sent to other players as Jammer Pac-Man – designed to slow the movement of anybody who bumps into them.

The strategy gets even deeper with four power-ups and four targeting options. Power ups will provide bonuses like extra speed to make you more nimble. Targeting options, on the other hand are designed to make other people’s life hell. Choose ‘Knockout’ and you’ll focus all of your attacks on somebody on the verge of losing to help send them over the edge.
Yep, video games can be really mean sometimes.
Honestly, we’re not sure if our blood pressure can handle this level of micromanagement, but it looks to be a great game for quick sessions on the go.

The one caveat to PAC-MAN-99 is that it’s a Nintendo Switch Online Exclusive. That means only Nintendo Switch owners who are subscribed to the company’s online multiplayer service will be eligible to download the game. It also goes without saying that you must be connected to the world wide web to play.
Gain access to both of those and bid farewell to all your free time.
