Move over Ultra Violet 18-3838, there’s a new sheriff in town. In one of the most hyped announcements of 2018 Pantone have announced that Living Coral 16-1546 is it’s 2019 Colour Of The Year.

The news may seem ironic when we consider that climate change and rising temperatures are slowly killing all the coral in the Great Barrier Reef, but Pantone have given reasoning for their 2019 Colour Of The Year choice.

A statement on the colour matching company’s website states “Living Coral emits the desired, familiar, and energising aspects of colour found in nature. In its glorious, yet unfortunately more elusive, display beneath the sea, this vivifying and effervescent colour mesmerises the eye and mind. Lying at the centre of our naturally vivid and chromatic ecosystem, Living Coral is evocative of how coral reefs provide shelter to a diverse kaleidoscope of colour.” DEEP.

The executive director of the Pantone Colour Institute also released a rather long statement which you can read below.

Yeah, cool… Via Pantone

Previous colour of the year winners include Greenery, Rose-Quartz, and of course 2o14’s shock winner Radiant Orchid. If you were wondering how the winner is chosen each year, the website tells us “The Colour of the Year selection process requires thoughtful consideration and trend analysis. To arrive at the selection each year, Pantone’s colour experts at the Pantone Colour Institute comb the world looking for new colour influences.”

If you’re like me and think that Coral has kinda been a bit of a colour-trend for a couple of years now, don’t stress too much. Whilst they makes this seem like a big deal, in reality it probably will not affect your day to day life. If you want to buy a Pantone 2019 Colour Of The Year mug, think about your life choices and what brought you to this point.

If you feel like it’s necessary, watch a tutorial on how to use Pantone colours below. Because apparently they’re different to other colours or something?
