South Korean actress Park So-dam, who rose to fame internationally for her role in Parasite, has been diagnosed with cancer at the age of 30.
As per CNN, the actress was diagnosed with papillary thyroid cancer while attending a routine health check. So-dam’s agency, ArtistCompany, revealed that she has since undergone surgery. ArtistCompany’s statement also expressed So-dam’s disappointment at now being unable to promote her new movie, Special Delivery.
“The company would like to once again thank all the people for showing support for Special Delivery and actress Park So Dam, as well as the actors and crew of Special Delivery overcoming this difficult time together,” the agency said.
“Actor Park So Dam will focus on her recovery so that she can see you all healthy in the future, and ArtistCompany will also do our best to help the actor recover her health.”
Papillary thyroid cancer is the most common type of thyroid cancer, according to the U.K.’s National Health Service (NHS). It most commonly affects women under the age of 40, and is more treatable than other types of thyroid cancer, as per the NHS.
“Around 9 in every 10 people are alive 5 years after a diagnosis of thyroid cancer,” the NHS states on its website. “Many of these are cured and will have a normal lifespan.”
So-dam played Kim Ki-jung, the daughter of a poor Seoul family who pretends to be an art therapist in order to get a job teaching the young child of a very wealthy family.
