A new PlayStation Studios job listing has led fans to speculate what major Sony franchises might be headed to mobile devices.

In news that will equally delight and anger hardcore PS4 and PS5 fans, you could soon be playing the likes of God of War and Uncharted on your mobile phones.

The surprising news comes via Video Games Chronicle who smartly noticed that PlayStation Studios is currently looking to hire a head of mobile. The ad reportedly mentions that the person placed in this role will be helping develop a ‘mobile product roadmap’ within a 3-5 year period.

“As Head of Mobile, you will own and develop the mobile games strategy for PlayStation Studios and help build a foundation for future growth opportunities,” the job description states.

“You will lead all aspects of the expansion of our game development from consoles and PCs to mobile & Live Services with a focus on successfully adapting PlayStation’s most popular franchises for mobile.

“You will be responsible for building and scaling a team of mobile leaders and will serve as the Head of this new business unit within PlayStation Studios.”

Hardcore Sony fans at the idea of new mobile games

Sony wouldn’t be the first major video game brand to jump into the mobile space. Nintendo has been putting unique experiences onto both iPhone and Android devices for quite some time now. They’re not all hits, however. Mario Kart Tour, for example, launched to a whimper, while let’s not forget the chaos that was Pokémon Go.

What would the PlayStation approach be? Honestly, we can’t imagine you’ll be playing the next major follow-up to The Last of Us Part II on your smartphone, so don’t get too concerned. That said, the PlayStation Vita and PSP were both handheld devices that saw major franchises on the small screen and were mostly well received.

The key difference here is that most modern phones have a painful lack of control. Being forced to include touch controls might therefore lead to more creative solutions – like Uncharted: Fight for Fortune – the long-forgotten card game. Or maybe a God of War-inspired dating sim.

The possibilities are endless, PlayStation. Just call us.
