Rebel Wilson faces further criticism from fans after she doubles down on her trip to Dubai with more Instagram pictures.

Australian actress Rebel Wilson has come under heavy criticism from her followers after sharing pictures of her luxurious getaway to Dubai. Wilson was among other celebrities invited to the opening of the new Atlantis The Royal resort, where Beyoncé was reportedly paid around $34 million to perform a private set.

The actress posted an album of her appearance at the launch, but many followers were quick to point out the hypocrisy that she was promoting Dubai and the United Arab Emirates, where homosexuality remains a crime in which the death penalty is a possible punishment.

One follower wrote, “Aren’t you a member of LGBTQ+ community? The hypocrisy of it all.” Another said, “Uhm, they kill our kind over there. Why are you promoting this?”

Wilson came out as a member of the LGBTQIA+ community during Pride Month last year and revealed she was in a relationship with Ramona Agruma.

The backlash towards Wilson’s promotion of Dubai and the United Arab Emirates is not new. In November, a similar backlash erupted for those involved in the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, where homosexuality is also still illegal and punishable by imprisonment.

It is clear that Wilson’s promotion of Dubai and the United Arab Emirates has not gone down well with her followers, many of whom have taken issue with the fact that she is a member of the LGBTQIA+ community and is seemingly promoting a country where homosexuality is illegal.

While some may argue that Wilson is simply enjoying her vacation and is not necessarily promoting the country, the fact remains that Dubai does these kinds of celebrity PR events all the time.

The country invites a large number of celebrities to their country to do a bunch of fun activities that only the wealthy can afford, Dubai then uses whoever accepts their offer to sanitize the image of their country. Rebel is just the latest in a string of celebrities to engage in the UAE’s PR circus.
