1. The First Record I Bought

D’Angelo – Brown Sugar LP. Before this I would listen to my sister’s collection, which was mainly soul-related, and my brother who was obsessed with Orbital. D’Angelo and the Fugees were being heavily played during my [high school] GCSEs and I knew there was just something in this sound I related to.

2. The Last Record I Bought

Equinox – ‘Into Battle’. I’ve been playing this since 2001, but it was finally time for a new copy. The energy is this track is perfect for the bridge between house and techno. It’s so simple but just so complex in depth of field at the same time. A true masterclass in production.

3. The First Thing I Recorded

I learnt my trade at the School of Sound Recording in Manchester. I think it’s really crucial to have some understanding on what and how sound works. I actually look back at previous works and now ten years on with a smile. I’m very proud of what I’ve achieved so far. We are still re-pressing Working Nights, my first LP, today. Hip hop was more or less what I was making from the get-go and it naturally evolved into what I do today.

4. The Last Thing I Recorded

I have just completed my fourth LP 1979, which is set around the conspiracy theory that we already have humans walking on planet Mars. Most of the LP was completed at Analog Cabin in your lovely city, Sydney. I’m enjoying the process of working with other musicians and engineers to develop ideas and soundscapes like the old masters such as Quincy Jones.

5. The Record That Changed My Life

There is a lot of music that changed me but when I first heard Moodymann’s Forevernevermore, something lit up above my head. Here, I knew I could marry my love of hip hop, jazz, soul, disco and early ’80s electronic in one sound. This is now evident in my production and DJ style, even to this day.
