In some rare good news inadvertently caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, season five of Rick And Morty could actually arrive on time or possibly earlier.

Over the last seven years or so, a recurring pattern has emerged when it comes to Rick And Morty: A season of episodes drop, fans all over froth over how good everything is, the show’s creators Dan Harmon and Justin Roiland promise big things for the next season, we end up waiting way longer than expected for said big things (it was a two and a half year wait between season three and season four), new episodes drop from almost nowhere, and the cycle repeats again.

But it appears that cycle has been broken somewhat for season five and it’s because of the COVID-19 pandemic of all things.

During a virtual conversation for PaleyFest NY 2020 (via SYFY WIRE), Harmon says that despite the pandemic’s impact on the film and TV industry, the digital workflow on the latest Rick And Morty season has actually benefited from these production setbacks.

“We’re more on schedule than we’ve ever been,” Harmon said, adding that it is far easier to get animated shows like Rick And Morty running again than live-action productions. “It kind of makes you have to focus on the whole process when you don’t have this office environment anymore. Everyone has to run this bee colony remotely, so the honey just gets made more consistently. It’s working for us.”

This is music to the ears of every Rick And Morty fan out there but best not to get too excited as we’ve all been burned by the promise of new episodes arriving on time before.

As for what to expect in season five, Harmon kept his cards (and the premiere date) close to his chest but he did drop a tidbit about Morty being in a relationship with another female character who isn’t Jessica.

“There’s an episode in Season 5 where Morty has a relationship with another female character that’s not Jessica,” Harmon said. “It’s just a great little story and my very, very longtime friend and collaborator Rob Schrab wrote it.

“He’s also a very tender writer; a juvenile, John Hughes, he really feels heartache on a level a man his age shouldn’t. There’s an episode coming up in Season 5, my Emmy is going to that one.”

Oh jeez, Rick!
