Many bars and restaurants across Russia are apparently running out of beer, due to World Cup fans sinking too many bevvies. “We just didn’t think they would only want beer,” said one waiter from Moscow.

With temperatures reaching up to 29°C in parts, it’s no wonder football fans are sinking god’s nectar by the gallon.

It’s reported that consumption of beer in Russia has fallen by a third in the last decade. This is due to tightened regulations on advertising and increased taxes. This cultural shift and subsequent statistic may be to blame for the nations’ inability to quench fans’ thirst.

Host city of Nizhny Novgorod was the first to go under, when Swedish fans descended upon the small city centre to watch their home team’s opening match. Opponents South Korea lost, even after their valiant efforts to trick a Swedish spy, sent to the pre-game training by the team coach. One man’s loss is another man’s gain however, with Sweden’s triumphant 1-0 victory being their first World Cup win in 12 years.
