The Saved By The Bell reboot has come under fire for making fun of Selena Gomez and her health issues.
In a recent episode of the series, which is currently available on Stan, two characters are seen debating about the identity of Gomez’s kidney donor.
While the characters argued over whether it was Justin Bieber’s mother or Demi Lovato who donated the kidney, in actuality, it was Gomez’s friend, Francia Raisa.
On top of the scene of the students arguing, a later scene depicts a graffiti message on the wall of a locker room which reads: “does Selena Gomez even have a kidney.”
Unsurprisingly, the show has since received backlash over its lack of sensitivity regarding Gomez’s serious health issues, which include a battle with lupus.
Raisa, who donated her kidney to Gomez back in 2017, has taken to social media to reveal she has received personal apologies from those involved in the show.
“Some of the cast and producers have reached out to me personally to apologise for this and I truly appreciate that, but I do want to acknowledge that this public apology from the network should acknowledge the donors that could have been offended by this… It’s not about me, it’s about acknowledging the great role that donors play,” she said in an Instagram story (via news.com.au).

Raisa also continued her sentiment over on Twitter, urging people to “not forget about the donors that potentially felt offended and dismissed from the spray paint written on the wall.”
Following the controversy, American streaming service Peacock, NBCUniversal and the show’s executive producers apologised in a statement to Variety.
“We apologise. It was never our intention to make light of Selena’s health. We have been in touch with her team and will be making a donation to her charity, The Selena Gomez Fund for Lupus Research at USC,” the statement read.
Meanwhile, Gomez herself has yet to speak publicly on the matter.
