Shane Warne’s family have reportedly requested for the MCG to change the name of the Great Southern Stand which was set to be called the S.K. Warne Stand as a permanent tribute to the later cricketer.

Seven News has reported that his family has asked for the stand to be renamed the Shane Warne Stand in accordance with Warney’s wishes. The request has been obliged and the stand will use his full name, rather than his initials.

‘I spoke to a senior government source who emphasised the final decision will be down to the Warne family,’ Seven News reporter Tom Browne said.

‘My understanding is that it will be known as the Shane Warne stand.’

Shane Warne died on March 4th 2022 from a suspected heart attack that took place in a Thai villa that he was staying in. He was aged 52.

Melbourne born Warne was the former captain of the Australian National Team and one of the greatest bowlers in history, gaining him the nickname ‘Spin King’.

Warne’s ex wife Simone Callahan and three children Jackson, Brooke and Summer visited a statue of Warne that sits outside of the MCG. The statue has acted as a make shift memorial that’s been flooded with flowers and cards commemorating the cricketer.

‘Always here with us, dad.,’ Warne’s youngest daughter Summer wrote alongside a photo of the surviving family standing in front of the statue.

Brooke also posted a photo at the memorial, captioning it; “We are so grateful for everyone’s support, the messages and love we have received is so special and touching, [everyone’s] support around our Dad’s statue is beyond heart-warming thank you.”

Warne’s body arrived back to Australia on Thursday via a private jet, and a private memorial is expected to be held in the coming days.
