The new doco-series Harry and Meghan dropped on Netflix yesterday, and in less than 24 hours, it’s managed to cause a royal uproar.
From Harry revealing that his family pressured him to marry someone who fit the royal “mould” to going into details about Meghan’s media stalking, there were bombshells aplenty. So much so, that British Conservative MP Bob Seely said he’s bringing forward legislation in an attempt to strip the Duke and Duchess of Sussex of their royal titles.
Check out five of the most shocking bombshells that were revealed on Harry and Meghan.
1. Harry’s family thought their relationship wouldn’t last
Harry said that while the royal family was impressed with Meghan’s beauty, they dismissed the relationship because she was an American actress.
“I remember my family first meeting her and being incredibly impressed, some of them didn’t quite know what to do with themselves. Because I think they were surprised. They were surprised that a ginger could land such a beautiful woman and such an intelligent woman. But the fact that I was dating an American actress was probably what clouded their judgment more than anything else at the beginning, ‘oh she’s an American actress; this won’t last’,” Harry said.
Meghan interjected: ‘The actress thing was the biggest problem, funnily enough. There is a big idea of what that looks like from the UK standpoint – Hollywood – and it’s just very easy for them to typecast that.’
2. Harry and Meghan met on Instagram
Harry was scrolling on Instagram when he came across a photo of Meghan with a dog filter on.
“I was scrolling through my feed and someone who was a friend had this video of the two of them, it was like a Snapchat. That was the first thing. I was like “who is that?”‘ He said.
An email then flashes on the screen that shows Meghan’s friend messaging the actress to tell her about Harry’s interest.
“Between you and I thought you might want to know this being newly single and all. I put our Snapchat on Instagram and Prince Haz follows me (he’s a friend) he called me last night dying to meet you. hehehe. I might just have to set you up’ [sic].’
3. Meghan said the royal family is formal even behind closed doors
Meghan said that she was suprised that the royal family weren’t more relaxed when they were out of the public eye.
“I met her [Kate] for the first time, they came over for dinner,” said Meghan. “I remember I was in ripped jeans and I was barefoot. I was a hugger, I’ve always been a hugger, I didn’t realise that that is really jarring for a lot of Brits.”
“I started to understand very quickly that the formality on the outside carried through on the inside.
“That there is a forward-facing way of being, and then you close the door,” she said, letting out a sigh of relief, before adding: “I can relax now. But that formality carries over on both sides and that was surprising to me.”
4. Salacious stories about them were planted in the press before their wedding
Meghan revealed that multiple negative stories about her and Harry were “planted” in the press days before their wedding.
“We were playing whack-a-mole every day. Every day it was like ‘Wait, another one popped up. Wait, stop, another story.’ Constant.”
The scene flashes newspaper headlines across the screen that say shes “related to a serial killer’ and references drug use.
“They were going through the woodwork and pulling people out to create and plant the most salacious stories that they could,” Meghan said.
5. Harry calls his choice to wear Nazi uniform “one of the biggest mistakes” of his life
In 2005, at age 20, Harry wore a Nazi soldier’s uniform with a red-and-black swastika armband to a friend’s costume party. Photos leaked in the press and it made the front cover of the New York Post.
“It was one of the biggest mistakes of my life,” he said. “I felt so ashamed afterwards. All I wanted to do was make it right. I sat down and spoke to the Chief Rabbi in London, which had a profound impact on me. I went to Berlin and spoke to a Holocaust survivor. I could have just ignored it and got on and probably made the same mistakes over and over again in my life. But I learned from that.”
