The Simpsons is the inspiration for a new music venue called Shotkickers, which is set to debut in Thornbury, Melbourne, in January 2022.

The 200-capacity venue is being revamped and the name has been changed to Shotkickers, a reference to the popular animated show, by musicians Christopher Windley and Mathias Northway.

“Shotkickers is a band venue Marge visits where the men are super rowdy yet super gentlemanly, and it seemed like a great mantra,” said Windley. “I also love Simpsons shitposting so hopefully I can claim to own the biggest Simpsons meme in town.”

As well as its new name, Shotkickers (formerly known as Swamplands Bar/Tago Mago) will have a bigger stage, a new band room, booth seating and a fresh kitchen menu when it opens next month.

“The bar was welded by a muso,” continues Windley. “The stage was built by musos. The roof got painted by musos. Everyone is so excited to bring something fresh to the scene.”

Amidst the COVID-19 pandemic live music has been hit especially hard, and Windley and Northway wanted to provide a venue to help build up musos that were affected during the last two years of constant lockdowns. “While reimagining the venue we’ve had the artist experience at the forefront of every experience,” said Northway. “Bands have had a rough trot of late and many incredible musicians live a stone’s throw away. We love the idea that bands could literally walk into the venue, backline is provided, booze is flowing and the sound system is top notch.”
