Just weeks after it was announced that Hamilton would finally make its way to Australia, the Gods of theatre have smiled on us again, with news that Shrek: The Musical will be making its Aussie debut in 2020.
Back in 1990, William Steig published his book Shrek!, a surprisingly endearing children’s book that focused on a green ogre saving a princess.
While Steven Spielberg originally planned to make a feature film adaptation of the story, fans would have to wait until 2001 before the pop-culture phenomenon that is Shrek would finally make its way to our screens, winning an Academy Award in the process.
Since then, we’ve seen three sequels, spin-offs, short films, theme park rides, and amazingly, even a musical based on the film. Now, after more than a decade of waiting, Shrek: The Musical is finally set to make its way to Australia.

Announced today, theatre producer John Frost had revealed that Shrek: The Musical will be making its way to Australia in January of 2020.
With things set to kick off at the Sydney Lyric Theatre, The Star, seasons will follow at Her Majesty’s Theatre, in Melbourne and the Lyric Theatre, in Brisbane.
“I saw Shrek: The Musical on Broadway when it opened in 2008 and fell in love with it,” John Frost explained.
“After a very successful season, it toured the US and since played the West End followed by a long UK tour, as well as Asia, across Europe, Canada, Latin and South America, Israel and Scandinavia amongst others.
“I was bowled over by the way audiences responded to the social issues it covers, themes like friendship, discrimination, acceptance, inclusiveness and ‘don’t judge a book by its cover’. I know Australia is going to fall in love with Shrek: The Musical as much as I did.”
While audience reviews of the musical are resoundingly positive, it appears we won’t have long to wait before Aussie audiences get the chance to finally catch the musical at a theatre near them.
If you’re keen on heading along, be sure to register yourself for the waitlist at the official website, with tickets to the Sydney season going on sale from July 5th, with pre-sales kicking off on July 1st.
In related news, it was recently revealed that the Shrek soundtrack would at long-last be getting an official release on vinyl. Oh, and before you ask, yes, it does include Smash Mouth’s ‘All Star’.
