On January 14th, acclaimed singer-songwriter Sia will make her directorial debut with her film, Music.
The powerful musical film was directed co-written and produced by Sia, and shines a spotlight on a talented cast that includes Oscar nominee and Golden Globe-winning Kate Hudson (Almost Famous), and Tony and Grammy winner Leslie Odom Jr. (Hamilton). Maddie Ziegler, who has been Sia’s friend and creative muse since 2014 when Sia directed her in the video for ‘Chandelier’, makes her big screen debut as the film’s titular character.
Music tells the story of Zu (Hudson), is a free spirit estranged from her family who suddenly finds herself the sole guardian of her half-sister, Music (Ziegler), The musical drama explores the tenuous bonds that hold us together and imagines a world where those bonds can be strengthened in times of great challenge: love, trust, and being able to be there for each other is everything.
The film also stars Mary Kay Place (Being John Malkovich), Juliette Lewis (What’s Eating Gilbert Grape?), Ben Schwartz (Parks and Recreation), and Hector Elizondo (Pretty Woman).
The screenplay was written by Sia in collaboration with Dallas Clayton, based on a short story from the Adelaide songstress, and will feature ten new Sia songs performed as musical numbers.
“Sia’s debut film Music surpasses every expectation and she uses to extraordinary effect her own original music and dance sequences to present a bright alternative reality for her lead character Music, who is played with incredible delicacy by the talented Maddie Ziegler, an exciting discovery for international audiences,” HanWay Films MD Gabrielle Stewart said of the movie. “Sia has elicited awards-worthy performances from each of her three lead actors, including a tour de force from Kate Hudson and a third awards opportunity for Leslie Odom Jr.”
To celebrate the release of the film, we’re giving away 10 double passes. To enter tell us in 25 words or less what your favourite Sia song is and why.
