A New York Times article has revealed exactly how much Snapchat is willing to pay people to go viral and oh boy, they may be a little desperate.
Back in November, Snapchat released a new feature called Spotlight in an attempt to emulate the success of TikTok and Instagram Reels.
As in incentive to use the Spotlight feature by uploading short videos, Snapchat announced it was willing to award users a share of a whopping USD $1 million a day.
“Submit your best video Snaps to Spotlight for the opportunity to earn a share of more than $1 million that we’re distributing to creators every day,” a blog post published by Snapchat at the time read.
Now the New York Times has tracked down some of the lucky users and found out how much cash they have raked in.
One of the creators making serious bank is 19-year-old Cam Casey, who has earned nearly USD $3 million from Snapchat in a mere two months.
Originally a successful Tik Tok user with over 7 million followers, Casey jumped ship in Snapchat in order to cash in.
Influencer Joey Rogoff has earned more than USD $1 million through Spotlight and told the New York Times that creators are incentivised by the high rate of pay.
“TikTok set that precedent of what kind of content people are looking for… Snapchat has done a really good job of recreating that in their own way, building that into their own app,” he said.
“They’re the highest paying platform right now. Hopefully, other platforms see that and will follow their lead because ultimately that’s what’s going to make creators the happiest.”
Meanwhile, Snapchat told the publication that it determines payment amount based on unique video views and proprietary internal metrics (whatever they are).
