There’s epic news for PS4 users, with Sony announcing a new plan to give away select free games to users. The Play At Home initiative will see PlayStation 4 owners receive free access to two games during the month of April, with no strings attached.

From April 15, PS4 users can download both Uncharted: The Nathan Drake Collection and Journey. Simply complete the download before May 5 to receive the games absolutely free, with users able to keep and store the games in their PlayStation libraries.

“People all over the world are doing the right thing by staying home to help contain the spread of COVID–19,” said Jim Ryan, President & CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment in a blog post.

“We are deeply grateful to everyone practicing physical distancing and take our responsibility as a home entertainment platform seriously, so we are asking our community to continue supporting the safe choice and the need to Play At Home.”

Ryan revealed that game downloads may take a bit longer than usual in the US and Europe, as Sony is working to preserve internet access for those who need to most by slowing their game downloads.

In addition to the free games, the other aspect of the Play At Home initiative will see Sony Interactive Entertainment help fund small gaming studios, including making US$10 million available for independent development partners.

“Independent developers are vital to the heart and soul of the gaming community and we understand the hardships and financial struggles that many smaller gaming studios are facing,” said Ryan.

Ryan added that he believes gaming can help people significantly during times of social distancing.

“During these days of physical distancing, fans have turned to gaming for moments of respite and enjoyment. At Sony Interactive Entertainment, we are privileged to bring this much-needed entertainment.

“We know this is just one small step and we are thankful to be able to offer this support to our players, our communities, and our partners.”
