The long awaited sequel to 1996 cult classic film Space Jam is finally materialising before our very eyes, with the addition of two industry dynamos to the Tune Squad.

With LeBron James in the starring role, Black Panther director Ryan Coogler has been tapped as producer, with Terence Nance, creator of HBO’s Random Acts of Flyness, positioned in the director’s chair, announced The Hollywood Reporter.

The Warner Bros. project is tentatively slated to begin production during the 2019 NBA off-season. The Space Jam sequel has big shoes to fill; the original film raked in around $250 million worldwide, and is still the highest-grossing basketball film of all time.

“The Space Jam collaboration is so much more than just me and the Looney Tunes getting together and doing this movie,” said LeBron James during an interview with The Hollywood Reporter.

“I’d just love for kids to understand how empowered they can feel and how empowered they can be if they don’t just give up on their dreams. And I think Ryan did that for a lot of people.”

“I loved his vision” for Black Panther, James said, noting that when he was a kid growing up in Akron, Ohio, there were no black superheroes. “So for Ryan to be able to bring that to kids, it’s amazing.”

It’s sure to be a nostalgia trip for many. To start you off on that trip down memory lane, watch the trailer for the original Space Jam below:
