The symbolic partnership between Sony and Marvel that saw Spider-Man slinging into the MCU was a sign that anything is possible in life. Well, nerts to that, it seems, with news coming in overnight hat Spidey may be permanently snapped from the MCU all together because a Civil War between Sony and Marvel owner Disney.

Multiple sources have confirmed that stalled negotiations could spell the end of Tom Holland’s Spider-Man, if Sony and Disney can’t make an agreement. It’s worth noting that any backlash to this news might be the very thing that gets the two back to table, eager to hash out a deal.

Originally, the deal consisted of Disney receiving 5% of first dollar gross, which is fancy Hollywood speak for copping 5% of the films box office take upon its release day. Sources familiar with the deal have said Disney is now seeking a 50/50 split however Sony isn’t too keen on moving away from that 5% of first day gross figure.

It’s somewhat of an awkward situation given that Sony owns the film rights to stand-alone Spider-Man films, while Disney owns the franchising rights to the beloved web-slinger. The latest instalment, Spider-Man: Far From Home pulled in a little over $1 billion, so there’s a fair bit of cheese at stake for all those concerned.

IGN also point out that Disney have received a cool $18 billion off their initial $4 billion investment into Marvel, so they too have considerable skin in the fight.

Should a deal not be negotiated, this won’t mean the end of Spider-Man films all together, but it will be a jarring end to the current story arch for MCU Phase 4.

Both Variety and Deadline make it clear that a deal could still be struck between the two, especially considering Disney CEO Bob Iger has been actively working to maintain a stable relationship between Sony and Marvel.
