More than 20 years after it was first broadcast, SpongeBob SquarePants is finally set to receive a spin-off series.
Ask anyone, and they’ll likely agree that one of the most popular television shows of the last 20 years is none other than SpongeBob SquarePants.
Created by late marine biologist Stephen Hillenburg, the show premiered on the Nickelodeon network back in May of 1999 and has since become the fifth-longest-running American animated series.
However, with a number of related films, an influence on pop culture that is hard to ignore, and a media franchise that has generated more than $13 billion in revenue, the show is about to receive its first-ever spin-off series.
As Deadline reports, Nickelodeon have ordered 13 episodes of Kamp Koral, a computer-generated program which will depict a ten-year-old SpongeBob SquarePants and his experiences at summer camp.
According to the press release, the new series will show SpongeBob and his pals as they “spend the summer building underwater campfires, catching wild jellyfish, and swimming in Lake Yuckymuck at the craziest camp in the kelp forest.”
With Marc Ceccarelli and Vincent Waller signed on to co-executive produce the new series, production will begin soon, with a premiere date of 2020 in mind.
