Squid Game Director and Creator Hwang Dong-hyuk has announced he is working on a new film currently titled Killing Old People Club

According to Variety, Hwang pitched K.O. Club as “another controversial film” that “will be more violent than Squid Game.”

And if you’ve seen Squid Game, (and you have) that means we can expect some serious gore and blood in the new film.

Previously Hwang had noted that if it wasn’t for Netflix’s involvement, the series wouldn’t have made it on the screen, with concerns it was “too violent and investors would have been so worried.”

“When I showed it to my producer, she said ‘yeah you have to make it in the States,’” explained Hwang. “‘Like, in a foreign country, not in Korea, because it’s more like a global show.’”

Regarding a sequel to the hit series, Hwang revealed he would soon be returning to South Korea to begin working on season 2. He hopes to have it on Netflix by the end of 2024.

Squid Game is Netflix’s most-watched series of all time, totaling to 1.6 billion hours of watch time. Understandably, this launched the Director and its stars to a whole new level of fame and prestige.

One of Hwang’s new fans is none other than Hollywood golden boy Steven Spielberg. Hwang met the Director at the AFI Awards Luncheon.

“Steven Spielberg told me ‘I watched your whole show in three days and now I want to steal your brain!’” says Hwang. “It was like the biggest compliment I ever got in my life because he’s my film hero. I grew up watching his movies.”

Spielberg suggested that “A long time ago it was domestic stars that brought the audience into movies. Today, it’s interesting, unknown people.”

The comment was considered controversial for suggesting they were “unknown people,” but we do share Spielberg’s excitement for the hit series.
