Can the Stranger Things skating rink scene get sadder? Yes, because it apparently happened on Will’s birthday, which everyone forgot about.

We’ve all had our fair share of continuity goof-ups on screen – from stray Starbucks coffee cups to things showing up in inexplicable places. This one, on Stranger Things, however, has fans of the show all riled up. Eagle-eyed fans have pointed out that apparently the writers (or the characters) of the show forgot Will’s birthday.

Normally, this won’t be too much of an issue if it cropped up in an otherwise insignificant scene. This revelation, however, came in the famous skating rink scene, making it all the more sad.

In said scene, Will, Eleven, and Mike’s day at the skating rink is ruined when Eleven is publicly bullied. This, in turn, causes a rift between Mike and Will, where Will calls the former out for making him feel ‘miserable’ and ‘a total third wheel’, and Mike tells Will that he ‘sabotaged’ the whole day.

Since no one mentions anything about Will or wishes him, the implication is that they forgot it was his birthday. Of course, the fact that Mike tells Will he ruined his and Eleven’s day – on what was presumably Will’s birthday – makes it worse, especially since Will’s feelings of isolation and alienation after the events of Season 1 have been a major plot point in the show.

Of course, fans of Will came out in full force on the internet to support him.

“So anyone notice that it was march 22nd at the roller rink… will’s birthday?? no one said anything?” said one user on Twitter, aptly named @joycelhopper

Another chimed in: “mike told will that he ruined the day…and it was Will’s birthday….”

The Mike-critic train, in fact, had left the station and was barrelling towards its destination at full speed.

But that’s not all – once it started trending, even the official account for Stranger Things writers weighed in.

“some friends forget to play dnd and some forget birthdays, it happens.” the show’s official account tweeted.

Yeah, not when those friends have saved someone from the Upside Down and fought a Demogorgon together, Netflix.
