The Duffer Brothers would like you to know that they are sorry about forgetting Will’s birthday on Stranger Things.

Earlier this week, Stranger Things fans were up in arms about the show’s writers and creators forgetting Will’s birthday.

An eagle-eyed fan had noticed the fateful skating rink scene in the show, which led to a fight between Mike and Will, actually took place on March 22nd. This meant that Mike had told Will he ruined his day with Eleven… on Will’s birthday.

But Stranger Things creators Duffer Brothers have apologised and clarified that forgetting Will’s birthday wasn’t intentional – it really did slip their minds. While it’s all done and dusted, they’re still figuring out what to do with this new, unexpected development.

“The honest response is, clearly like the characters in the show, we also forgot about Will’s birthday. So the debate now is whether we adjust Will’s birthday or we just let it be really sad.” Matt Duffer told Variety in an interview.

“It was six years ago that I wrote that date!” added Ross Duffer.

They were quick to clarify, however, that they don’t harbour any hard feelings towards Will. It’s purely human error.

“You know how George R.R. Martin has somebody — I mean, his story is more vast — and Stephen King has someone who just keeps track of this stuff? We need. We don’t have that.” said Matt.

“So Ross and I, and my memory’s not great, but we love Will, and I don’t want people to think we don’t love Will because we forgot — we do! But now we mentioned Dustin’s birthday this season, so we’re being very careful for people not to forget, in case the timelines…” he added.

For a time, they played with the idea of George Lucas-ing the situation and changing the birthday to May 22nd, but that might not work either.

“Of course that would mean his mom forgot his birthday! It’s too mean. It was obviously a mistake, and we’re sorry. We apologise to the fans.” Ross said.
