Sydney Sweeney recently talked about how her comments on Euphoria nudity scenes were taken out of context and defends Sam Levinson.
Sydney Sweeney’s comment on a particular instance on the set of Euphoria, alongside other actresses opening up about nudity, was quickly picked up by media outlets. The coverage of the quotes were then used as criticism towards Sam Levinson, which Sydney Sweeney is now attempting to clear up.
Sweeney’s initial comments came with Britain’s Independent, “There are moments where Cassie was supposed to be shirtless and I would tell Sam, ‘I don’t really think that’s necessary here.’ He was like, ‘Okay, we don’t need it.’ I’ve never felt like Sam has pushed it on me or was trying to get a nude scene into an HBO show. When I didn’t want to do it, he didn’t make me.”
More recently, Sweeney has talked about her previous comments in an interview with Teen Vogue. The 24-year-old actor offers further context to her previous statements and says that her focus should really be on how comfortable Sam Levinson made her feel.
“I never asked [Sam Levinson] to cut any scenes. It got twisted and became its own beast. It was more how respectful he is and how incredible of a director he is, that he would never make me do something I didn’t feel comfortable with.”
Sweeney continued to talk about the issue from a story perspective, talking about how the character’s nudity reflects everyday things that real people do.
“I think it’s important to the storyline and the character,” she says. “There’s a purpose to what that character is going through. That’s the character. We all get naked in real life. We show this character’s life and what they’re going through. Cassie’s body is a different form of communication for her.”
