Sydney’s northern beaches will be sent into lockdown at 5pm, until midnight of Wednesday.
A couple of days ago, a couple of people from Sydney’s northern beaches tested positive for the COVID-19.
Those two cases were considered mystery cases, as the link to other known sources were not identified.
And now NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian has laid down the law, announcing today that Sydney’s northern beaches region will go into lockdown until this Wednesday.
The lockdown announcement has come in after there now being 23 confirmed cases, with Berejiklian stating that 21 of the cases have been directly linked to the Avalon outbreak.
As expected from an imposed lockdown, people living in those suburbs are asked to stay home unless activity classifies as essential reasons: work, compassionate reasons, exercise or shopping.
While the northern beaches are the focal point of the COVID outbreak in Sydney right now, that doesn’t mean that the rest of Sydney will remain unaffected.
ABC News reported on Berejiklian’s press conference today, with Berejiklian’s stating, “I should say, to put everybody on notice, we will be considering today after consulting obviously the relevant people, whether this time tomorrow we do revert back to some restrictions in Greater Sydney, but we are still considering that.”
She added, “I just want to put everybody on notice that that is a possibility and that will depend on the health advice sent to us during the course of the day.”
ABC News has also reported that there has been a definite spike in the number of tests being conducted, with NSW Chief Health Officer Kerry Chant confirming that last night there was 12,734 tests done.
Looking ahead, Berejiklian is reminding Sydneysiders to remain calm. ”We are hoping that will give us sufficient time to get on top of the virus so we can then ease up for Christmas and the New Year moving forward.”
