Guys, it might just be the 21st century? Australia is one step closer to removing the Tampon Tax from sanitary items. This follows an eighteen-year campaign, rallying against the ten per cent tax that is applied to sanitary products.
Today a unanimous decision was made across Australia’s state and federal governments to exempt these sanitary products from GST.
The GST on these products has always been controversial. The tax is often deemed unfair as products including condoms and Viagra are exempt from tax.
The products that are expected to be made exempt include tampons, pads, menstrual cups, maternity pads and leak-proof underwear.
This decision will reportedly cost the states $30 million a year but the Coalition has argues that this loss will be easily covered because “they are already receiving more GST revenue than forecast” as ABC reports.
